So... Which one of you is hiring?

Kinja'd!!!

I got a foreboding email from my boss

We’ve had an absolute bear of a time hiring anyone so far this year and as such are doing pretty badly in terms of cash flow. I’m the only one who’s done any hiring, despite being the only manager who doesn’t actually have hiring as a part of their job description. But yeah, there’s nowhere near enough employees to handle the workload. It was “suggested” that I become a crew leader and work in the field for two days in addition to my full-time management gig until things improve. This would be unpaid. I’m already feeling pretty underpaid for the work I do, and the benefits are nonexistent.

I hate that I’ve become comfortable here. I lost the momentum I had when I sold my business... Man that was an amazing time. Making big decisions left and right... Boom! Change! Bam! New thing! Bam! No fear!

I’m trying not to be rash, but a part of me wants to walk away now. I’ve done quite a bit here, optomizing a large number of systems to increase productivity and drastically cut down on inefficiency. Not to mention bringing significant revenue in the form of better training programs, better gear, and a solid working relationship with a very large number of industry vendors and suppliers. Then there’s the physical work, optomizing vehicles, our warehouse, and headquarters to fit as much as possible in a well thought-out manor that allows easy access to everything. Most recently, I designed an interactive app-based vehicle checklist from the ground up that has already drastically cut down on various issues we’ve ran into in the past, and will be able to be used as a template for the company moving forward for years to come. In spite of all that I’m feeling incredibly unappreciated.

I wish I worked for a company where I was happy to put in extra time, I really do. I like putting in 100% and working my ass off. Unfortunately it seems like that’s a poor investment at this place....

In lighter news I got to spend the day with two huskies. They were the goodest of good boys. I want a dog

Yeah, that’s the tough part. I am lucky as an adjuster, I can work from home or even....take them on calls with me. I know a girl who does that on the Island.

Well, you’re escorting the customer to a finished product... You CAN have sex with them, but I find it doesn't usually doesn't pay as well.

Shelters near you are full of dogs looking for their person, but to do right by a dog they can’t be home alone all day. That situation doesn’t work out for either doggie or person.

But the flip side of that is they can come with you! If you’re doing road trips, and going anywhere that isn’t a national park, doggo will be by your side. Look at how inseparable Toby and IM are.

You could put in some time and train as a machinist. Many companies would hire you and you could get all the overtime you want. Starting pay for level 1 machinists is 15-17 bucks.

Level 3 rakes it in. Can Be $30 to $60. More if you're a specialist.

Yes, with his lifestyle, I’d say he should only get a dog if it could come to work with him. Which would require getting that V70 in good shape first.

That does sound pretty great. I didn't do much this year, but I normally spend a fair amount of time solo backpacking in the winter. That could be a lot of fun with the right dog

I actually looked into that maybe 5 months ago. I was trying to find a job for the weekend to supplement my current job, but I couldn't find a place that was willing to train someone for just two days a week. Which is understandable I guess

Yup! And, there are plenty of husky or shepherd mix dogs you could adopt that would love it. My old girl went absolutely nuts for it every time

Kinja'd!!!

My biggest regret about her being g one is that, while we went on a road trip, I never got the chance to go backpacking with her. I plan to remedy that very quickly with my next one.

Yeah, given how much you work, you should only get a dog if you’d bring it to work (whatever that took). Otherwise, cat makes more sense for you.

Hum. Well, some manufacturers actually do a 4/3 split — 4 day workweeks, and three-day work weekends.

Problem is, work weekends are 12 hour shifts typically, which I seriously doubt you’d be able to swing. Regardless, having some machinist knowledge under your belt could be useful for manufacturing replacement parts for your Miata when things go out of production. :P

I’ve been really really impressed with changes you brought to the new company. Not just this post but some of the others where you showed the crews the techniques you used. I would think you would get some equity, not the suggestion to help out in the field. Managers manage. Training in the field sure, but if they expect you to go out then it should be because of a temporary need, like someone out on leave. Your company seems not to have a clear plan to resolve the issue and increase staffing. Sending you out is just kicking the problem down the road on your shoulders.

On the other hand, when you had your own business, did you have the same staffing issues? Maybe it is a short term seasonal issue and good hires will be back in a couple of weeks. Would you go back to your own business?

You don’t want to move out here.

If it’s a strong suggestion to do the field work, I’d “think about it” and look for the next step (another job) pretty quickly. Otherwise it sounds like, regardless, it’s time to think about moving on.

I’d like to have a dog (they’re the best) but it’s just not right to leave him home alone all day while I’m at work, not to mention my frequent travel would be a huge pain to take the dog somewhere (and again unfair to him).

Maybe if I hit the powerball I’ll move out there and we can open a speed shop.

I hate that I’ve become comfortable here. I lost the momentum I had when I sold my business.

I was in exactly the same boat a year and a half ago: I had become very comfortable in the job I was in, where I’d been for nearly four years. The idea of looking for a new job, apart from being a lot of work, seemed like a scary gamble, given how toxic workplaces in tech can be. But now, my biggest regret is that I did not leave that job sooner. I think I should have gone a year before I did.

You know that this company is not treating you right. I’ve only been around here about a year, but it’s clear to me that your work is very important to you and you get a lot of satisfaction out of doing it well. If that satisfaction begins to feel hollow because your work isn’t being appreciated, you aren’t being recognized the way you should, and you don’t see a future you like in this job; well, that’s how you start getting burnt out and depressed (... ask me how I know).

I think you should start looking for a new job ASAP. If that’s really hard with how much you work, I’d consider just quitting if you’re not too worried about the financial impact. There’s no better way to both free up the time and provide a lot of immediate motivation to find something better.
